Immature embryos are dissected out from the fruit (seed) and grown artificially on medium which differentiate in to shoot, root and plantlets. This technique of growing immature embryo is termed as “embryo rescue”

Applications of Embryo rescue
• Production of haploids
• Breeding of incompatible interspecific and intergeneric species
• Overcoming seed dormancy
• Determination of seed viability
• Recovery of maternal haploids that develop as a result of chromosome elimination following interspecific hybridization
• Used in studies on the physiology of seed germination and development
• Clonal propagation
• Production of haploids
